Paul Street:
All Joy Reid, “Morning Joe,” Rachel Maddow, Michelle Goldberg, The Atlantic,
Laurence Tribe, Jamie Raskin, and Joe Biden et al have to offer in
terms of what is to be done about fascism is doubling down on the same
old failing, played-out bourgeois electoral and rule of law democracy
and the underlying capitalist-imperialist order that that pretend form
of popular sovereignty reflects and protects. We will not vote, prosecute, publish, boycott, Op-Ed, or Instagram- (or Substack-) post our way past the fascist Amerikaner menace. It will take a remarkable new people’s movement beneath and beyond all of that
not only to beat back fascism but to confront the underlying oppression
and exploitation system(s) that gives rise to fascism in the first
place
Ian Millhiser:
What the framers of the 14th Amendment were afraid of if there would come a time when there would be an individual who was both a threat to our constitutional system of government, and also has enough public support that they plausibly could get elected. Trump has a lot of mass support, and a lot of them have guns. They already attacked the US Capitol once they decide this case on January 15. I would not count on the Judge Fairy to show up and sprinkle magical pixie dust all over the United States and then the United States is saved from fascism.
Sam Goldman:
Refuse Fascism has always been upfront that the mechanism that is used to bar fascists from office or hold them accountable for their actions is of much less concern than the political will to do so. That motivation can only come from the mobilization of millions of people consciously taking action to stop fascism across every facet of our culture and our society. Without that societal transformation, not only is it very unlikely for legal repercussions to come down against the fascist movement, but it's also unlikely that they'd stick and more likely that the fascist movement would be empowered by what they see as vindication of their martyr status.
