Friend,

A lot has changed in our lives over the last few days. I hope you and your families are staying safe and healthy. I've heard from many people across Burlington and Ocean counties, and across the country, that are sharing really tough stories about their struggles, whether about health or about paying the rent and getting food. When 40 percent of Americans can't handle a $400 emergency, people are in dangerous situations.

This past Saturday, I worked with my colleagues in Congress to find an agreement on the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. This was focused on getting enough test kits out there for those that need them, and also looking out for those that are hit hard economically. A lot of the work we put into this was in direct response to hearing from many of you and others who shared with us the hardships you are having. Thank you for sharing those stories as it helps us make sure we are being responsive to your needs. You can read more about this legislation here ([link removed]).

We also need to take real steps to fix this shortage of test kits and personal protective equipment. This shortage is beyond frustrating because it is dangerous and putting people at risk. I worked with my colleagues across New Jersey to demand the Strategic National Stockpile provide necessary supplies so that New Jersey has the equipment needed to support our COVID-19 response. We know more supplies are available, and the Trump administration must open that up for use before we make matters even worse. In the meantime, the steps to activate the Defense Protection Act and other steps to increase production is much needed and hopefully will make a difference.

Finally, I would like to pass along guidelines that can help keep you and your family safe. There are simple CDC-recommended actions we can take every day to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19:

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick and put distance between yourself and other people if COVID-19 is spreading in your community. This is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick.
• Stay home if you are sick, and please call your care provider before seeking treatment.
• Cover your cough and sneezes.

To receive the latest updates about COVID-19, the CDC's website ([link removed]) is a helpful resource. If you have general questions about COVID-19, you can call New Jersey's public hotline at 1-800-962-1253 or 1-800-222-1222 or visit their website ([link removed]).

I will continue to monitor the situation and send updates. Please stay safe and remain vigilant.

Thank you,

Andy
