MICHIGAN COALITION FOR RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERS "Promoting safe use and ownership of firearms through education, litigation, and legislation." MONDAY E'NEWS   January 2024 CPL Report Michigan saw a modest increase in the total number of concealed pistol license holders in December, reaching a new record high of 820,446. It is typical for CPL applications to slow during the holidays. The first two weeks of December, MCRGO had its highest student certification numbers in over a year -an indication of strong growth for the first quarter of 2024. The full report from the Michigan State Police can be found HERE. Dana Nessel Signs on anti-Bump Stock Amicus Brief Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has joined a group of 22 other attorneys general urging the United States Supreme Court to uphold a federal rule banning bump stocks. In an amicus brief filed in Garland v. Cargill, Nessel urges the Supreme Court to overturn the federal appellate court’s decision striking down the 2018 bump stock ban. The Democratic attorneys general assert that the rule aligns with longstanding policies prohibiting automatic weapons and argue that overturning it would pose a threat to public safety and the safety of law enforcement officers. “Bump stock devices can transform a semi-automatic weapon into an automatic, military-grade weapon in every relevant sense,” said Nessel. “Skirting federal directives related to bump stocks puts public safety and law enforcement at risk. I wholeheartedly stand with my colleagues in asking the Supreme Court to uphold the validity of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms’ 2018 Final Rule.” The 2018 regulation banning bump stocks has faced multiple court challenges. In a challenge before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, a three-judge panel of the court ruled that the law banning machine guns did not unambiguously encompass bump stocks and therefore, it could not be applied against bump stock owners. The case is now before the Supreme Court following an appeal from the Biden administration. MCRGO encourages Nessel to refrain from using her office for political attacks on legal gun owners and instead focus on removing violent criminals from our communities.
