There are few countries less fortunate than Haiti. Not only does it suffer from spiraling political, criminal and economic chaos, it is hit by frequent natural disasters. In August 2021, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake killed thousands, destroyed schools and vital infrastructure, and collapsed 130,000 homes.
And yet Haiti’s people hold on. “We’ve never had hope on the island,” said Dunancia Joseph after the earthquake. “We’re experiencing things now that will make us very happy.”
What made Joseph happy? A goat. It doesn’t sound like much, but the goat and the husbandry training her family received gave them a source of income and helped them back on their feet.
Many Haitian families received goats after the earthquake, thanks to funding from the Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP), which backed numerous recovery projects on the island, such as housing construction, rebuilding of community assets and agricultural productivity programs.
This is what the CDP does. It supports equitable disaster recovery worldwide, enabling donors to give with the knowledge that their gifts will empower marginalized communities to rebuild and recover stronger. It ensures that affected communities are engaged in recovery as agents rather than objects of assistance.
CREDO Mobile is a CDP partner. We believe in their work and in December we delivered funds to the CDP to support it. These donations are generated by our members, just by using our service. They cost nothing extra—but they mean everything to the CDP and the many other groups that rely on us.
