John,
The struggle to safeguard the sacred waters of the Great Lakes and uphold the treaty rights of Michigan Tribes against the Line 5 pipeline project is reaching a critical juncture.
Despite formidable opposition, the Michigan Public Service Commission recently approved the pipeline with a glaring disregard for tribal sovereignty and environmental safety.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) has the power to halt this project. They are our last line of defense in preserving the integrity of the Great Lakes and the sovereignty of the Tribal Nations.
Join us in protecting the environment and respecting Indigenous sovereignty. Demand the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers refuse the Line 5 pipeline permits.
Enbridge Energy's proposed pipeline not only threatens the treaty-guaranteed fishing rights of the 12 Tribal Nations, including the Chippewa Ottawa Resource Authority (CORA) Tribes, but it also amplifies the risk of catastrophic oil spills and intensifies the global climate crisis.
In fact, the Line 6B disaster, where 840,000 gallons of oil polluted the Kalamazoo River, was one of the worst inland oil spills in U.S. history.
The overwhelming opposition, including over 23,000 public comments against the project and the unified stance of Michigan's 12 Tribal Nations, must not be ignored. The ACE has a duty to consider these voices and the irreversible damage Line 5 could cause.
Urge the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to honor Indigenous treaty rights and reject the permit for Line 5.
Let's honor the treaties, protect the environment, and respect the rights of Indigenous peoples.
