I know firsthand the damage a firearm can do in the wrong hands.

Tomorrow marks the 13th anniversary of the day my wife Gabby Giffords was shot at a Congress on Your Corner event in Tucson. Like so many other families affected by gun violence, our lives changed forever that day.

But Gabby has not quit. Neither have I. Because here in America, it is well within our power to solve tough problems.

That’s why I introduced legislation to reduce gun violence with several of my colleagues. The GOSAFE Act will help protect communities from the most dangerous semi-automatic rifles and high-capacity magazines like the one used in Tucson.

It doesn’t apply to handguns, hunting rifles, or shotguns commonly used for self-defense and hunting. What we’re talking about are the types of weapons that are designed to kill as many people as possible in as little time as possible.

These are the weapons we see used over and over again in deadly mass shootings.

Nothing we do can bring back the lives we’ve already lost to gun violence. But if we can take action — any action — that might save lives in the future, we should do it. This legislation can.

So today, I’m asking you to add your name and say that you support this plan. This is just the start of this process, and we need folks like you to speak out in support of it. Can you sign on?

It will take thousands and thousands of us joining together to help get this across the finish line. So please, add your voice alongside the others who have already signed on.

Thank you,

Mark
