Hi Johh,

On this day last year, my colleagues and I sat through 15 exhausting rounds of Republican infighting voting. For the first time in 100 years, the majority party in the House failed to elect a speaker on the first ballot — a fitting kick-off for a year that would showcase their utter inability to govern.

While on the House floor, I saw GOP members humiliate themselves repeatedly while scrambling to wrangle MAGA extremists into consensus to elect Kevin McCarthy.

Meanwhile, my colleagues and I sat through the insanity, more than ready to get back to work, united in our dedication to this country and the people we serve. I was proud we came together as House Democrats and unanimously stood behind our new leader, Hakeem Jeffries, through every round.

But this situation represents a dangerous cycle for our country. For fifteen rounds of voting and four days, our government was held hostage by far-right extremists. By giving concessions and special favors to these extremists, the GOP let the entire world know that their dignity and our legislative process are for sale. And we saw that continue as Speaker McCarthy was ousted and the chaos that became Speaker Johnson.

We can't let this extremist charade go on and destroy our democracy.

Throughout 2023, House Democrats showed our commitment to working united as one party for the American people. Now, we have the opportunity to take the House majority back and get our country back on the right track.

In November, we'll have the opportunity to retake the majority and have a House our country can be proud of, and the work to make that happen starts now.
