John,
Water and oil don’t mix. And that’s especially true when you’re dealing with greedy fossil fuel corporations that put profits ahead of environmental safety.
Right now there’s a dirty oil pipeline called Line 5 running between the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan―through the most critical part of the Great Lakes. It’s operated by Canadian multinational corporation Enbridge Energy, which is responsible for one of the worst inland oil spills in U.S. history. The company’s Line 6B pipeline dumped 840,000 gallons of oil into the headwaters of the Kalamazoo River.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered the pipeline to be shut down. But the Michigan Public Service Commission just granted Enbridge a permit that could potentially allow them to continue using the pipeline.
President Biden could end this threat today by revoking Line 5’s federal permit and committing to the truth that water is life.
Join me in calling on President Biden to act now to shut down the Line 5 pipeline, protect the human right to water, and put environmental justice over corporate greed. Add your name today >>
Native Tribes have been fighting hard against the Line 5 pipeline, which violates their sovereignty and their sacred and legally protected water and fishing rights.
The Great Lakes are also home to precious ecosystems and wildlife, holding 21% of the world’s fresh surface water. Tens of millions of people rely on them for drinking water, jobs, and recreation.
We cannot allow the water we rely on to live, the water that helps make Michigan such a special place for so many, to be sacrificed for corporate greed.
Sign now to demand President Biden shut down the Line 5 pipeline and put environmental justice over corporate greed.
Every day that oil flows through Line 5 is a catastrophic risk to the entire Great Lakes region.
Thank you. Together, we must keep pushing our government to recognize water as a human right.
In solidarity,
Rashida
