The rise of "donor collectives" transforming college sports
In a twist that we all should have seen coming, wealthy megadonors have invented "super PACs for college football" through which they can funnel money to their favorite teams in order to attract the best talent and pay them real salaries. Masquerading as — come on — tax exempt CHARITIES, these groups purchase the name, image, and likeness contracts for players who then get paid big bucks. The average starting player at one of the universities in the big football conferences now earns $103,000 a year from these "collectives." All four of the current college playoff teams, Michigan, Texas, Washington, and Alabama, all have teams funded by these groups. While it's about time that the players started earning some money instead of just being ruthlessly exploited by Big College Football, it causes some serious ethical quandaries when the megawealthy get to take a massive tax deduction by buying a superstar team for their school...and the IRS should want a word.

Christopher Rufo claims a degree from "Harvard." Umm... not quite
It turns out right-wing anti-education crusader Chris Rufo, who spearheaded both the imaginary "CRT" panic among Republicans and the recent witch-hunt against ex-Harvard President Claudine Gay for "plagiarism," has a few skeletons in his resume closet as well. He claims that after leaving Georgetown University in 2006 he earned a Master's degree from Harvard...except he didn't. He actually graduated from the Harvard Extension School in 2022, which is affiliated with the school but is not the Harvard that anyone usually thinks of. For instance, the Harvard Extension School doesn't require high school grades or SAT/ACT scores for admission. Course credits at HES are not accepted at...Harvard. It truly is remarkable how nearly every conservative accusation is in fact a projection of their own guilt.

Out of sight: America's prison crisis
The justice systems that operate in most red states are medieval-esque for a reason; prisons exist to funnel taxpayer dollars into private companies and for prisoners to provide free labor for the capitalist class. Texas' prison system has come under scrutiny after a slew of deaths — 28 inmates died in 2022 — exposed just how inhumanely the inmates are treated and how little oversight is conducted for these institutions, which, again, are all paid for by taxpayers. An overcrowding crisis at a Harris County prison prompted the county to pay $11.3 million to ship 360 people to a private prison in Mississippi. 70% of all the people in the Harris County prison are pre-trial, meaning they haven't been formally sentenced yet, but the backlog of cases is so bad that sometimes it takes 200 days before their cases are heard. It is abhorrent the way that people — human beings — are treated as sacks of meat to be shipped around the country, denied their right to a speedy trial, and ignored and abused so that money continues to flow into the hands of private contractors. This. Isn't. Justice.
