Three years ago, we witnessed what happens when the mob is granted an audience with President Trump.
Fueled by his lies about the outcome of the 2020 election, several thousand extremists turned from Trump’s rally to attack the U.S. Capitol. En masse, they stormed the gates, crushing police officers, threatening to hunt down members of Congress still trapped inside, and promising to hang Vice President Mike Pence for his refusal to capitulate.
In the wake of January 6th, all that was left behind was a trail of destruction, devastation, and — for those of us watching in horror from home — disbelief.
By 2021, 725 people had been charged with federal crimes for their role in the January 6th attack on the Capital. Heading into 2024, that number has risen to 1,202, more than half of those charged pleading guilty [\[1\]](<[link removed] charges:,bodily injury to an officer.?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2024-01-06-mothers-against-greg-abbott>).
A common refrain at trial (or sentencing) from the accused is the sentiment that they were actively manipulated by the former president and by the conservative media (aka Fox News) [\[2\]]([link removed]
**They were knowingly sold a Big Lie.**
Yet, the Big Lie has not deterred Trump’s campaign for the presidency. Trump is actively — and very publicly — campaigning on a platform centered around the idea that the 2020 election was stolen from him, and that our elections are still not safe. Whether it be in court rooms or campaign stops, the former president has taken every opportunity to sow chaos, division, and discord.
**The threat that Donald J. Trump poses to our nation’s democracy, our nation’s ideals, and our nation’s security cannot be overstated.**
We cannot allow a man like that to hold office of any kind, let alone the presidency. But Trump's message is *still* resonating with an alarming number of Americans.
Assuming his standing in the polls holds, more than eleven million Americans will knowingly and decisively cast their ballot for Donald Trump in the Republican primaries \[[3]([link removed] [4]([link removed]]. **Eleven million people isn’t a handful of violent crazies who we can discount, this is a significant percentage of the American public**, many of whom you do know, you do interact with, you do see at the school drop-off, the neighborhood playground, the grocery store.
When people ask me why I started Mothers Against Greg Abbott, and why we all are so committed to keeping this movement going — I point to the attack on January 6th, and I point to Trump’s current poll numbers. **This is why we continue to fight.** And we’re grateful that so many mothers and others like you have joined us in that fight.
In the past three years, we’ve grown into the largest parent-led coalition of its kind. Mothers Against Greg Abbott has been at the front-line as families all across America fight for the things that really matter to our future and our families. And we've been winning...
We have now witnessed the strength of parent power, in state victories in Virginia, Kansas, and Ohio as moms like us fought for and secured their reproductive rights and so much more.
