Dear John

These are uncertain, challenging times for us all for sure.

It’s also a time that we should all step up and look after ourselves, our families, friends and neighbours. We need to protect the vulnerable in our community including the elderly as best we can.

I wanted to reach out and let you know that I am closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation and keeping up to date with information as it comes at hand so that I can share it with you.

I’m receiving an increasing number of enquiries into the electorate office as people don’t know where else to go to for information.  People are worried and understandably so.

Our seniors, a vulnerable group, are concerned as not all of them have family support.

In the community, people are talking about Kiwisaver losses. Some are ready to buy houses and now there are shortfalls as world markets plummet. The resulting economic uncertainty is causing job losses and businesses are very concerned.

My main priority at the moment is the health and safety of our people, our community and to ensure you feel protected and supported. It is important that we protect ourselves too.

Here are some of the most frequent queries received and links to responses for the most common questions being asked.

Q – How can I best protect myself?
A - Good handwashing techniques and personal care as advised by the Ministry of Health are the best ways for you to protect yourself. These measures can be found here

The Ministry of Health is the Government agency leading the response to COVID-19 and provides health advice including symptoms, prevention, treatment and how the virus spreads.

Q – Where can I get survival kits?
A – Some office supplies stores stock these kits and details of what one should have in an emergency supply kit can be found on the Govt.nz website.

If you are unsure where to go to buy a supply kit, you can contact my electorate office and one of my team can talk you through potential options.

Q – Where can I go to get information on school closures?
A – The Ministry of Education website offers the most up to date information and resources for parents, caregivers and teachers about COVID-19 and how it affects our education sector.

Q – Where can I go to get the most up to date information on the virus?
A – The official website for information about the virus is www.covid19.govt.nz

Q – I am elderly or disabled, what support is available to me?
A - The Ministry of Health website references useful links on information for aged care providers, disabled people and residential care providers.

What can I do to help you?

If you do not have access to internet services, we can provide you with information over the phone or you can come into one of my offices. I want to make sure that you get quick access to support and resources on offer.

If you have any questions, please call one of my electorate offices in Cambridge 07 827 5572, South Waikato 07 886 5554, Taupo 07 376 5563 or on 0508TAUPOMP (0508 828 7667).

New information is coming out daily, it is important you follow me either on social media or subscribe to my newsletter so that you will always have the latest information at hand of any changes that may affect you.

Our grandfathers and their grandfathers were called up to protect our country during challenging times. Today we are called upon to take extra precautions with physical contact.

It sounds simple, but proper handwashing with soap is one of the best defences.

Stay safe, stay healthy and look out for each other. All of us can make a difference.

We can get through this together and I am here to support you.
