Team,
Today is a somber day in our nation’s history. Exactly three years ago, a violent mob attacked the Capitol in the wake of a rally initiated by former President Trump.
The insurrection in the U.S. Capitol was a coordinated attempt to violently overthrow our democratic process and our legally elected government. Make no mistake, these rioters viewed President Trump’s repeated claims of fraud as a call to action.
Two years later, many of my House Republican colleagues remain in Congress despite supporting the attempted destruction of our democracy. There are still many who refuse to speak out against the demagoguery on display on January 6th, 2021. Speaker Mike Johnson still echoes the very same conspiracy theories that brought on the attacks and even voted against certifying the election results just hours after the attack on the Capitol.
But the events of January 6th shocked and saddened the nation, democracy prevailed. I’m proud to continue protecting and preserving our democracy under President Biden. And today, I send my condolences to the families of the U.S. Capitol Police officers who lost their lives or suffered severely to save our democracy. Their sacrifices will not be forgotten.
