Three years ago, our Capitol, the symbol of American democracy, came under attack. It was a day that shook the very foundation of our principles, and its memory remains etched in my mind. Police officers were injured, Congress was overrun, and our very way of life was forced to the brink – simply because Donald Trump refused to accept the results of the 2020 election.

In order to hold Trump and his cronies accountable for this heinous assault on our Capitol, my colleagues on the January 6th Committee conducted a nearly two-year comprehensive and bipartisan investigation to find out exactly what happened in the lead up to, during, and after the attack. And the findings are clear:

Trump and his closest advisors knew full well that the conspiracies they were spreading about the 2020 election had the potential to incite violence on January 6th, but they did nothing as insurrectionists stormed the Capitol.

But thanks to the resilience of our justice system, Trump and his cronies will answer for their actions that day in a court of law. Last fall, the Justice Department unveiled an indictment charging former President Donald J. Trump with several criminal counts related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

This historic case is concrete proof that the foundation of our democracy is still holding strong. But as the wheels of justice continue in court, we must ensure that we remain vigilant as Trump and his extreme allies in Congress continue their efforts to undermine our democracy in 2024.

Finally, I hope you’ll take a moment to join me in honoring the Capitol Police officers who put their lives on the line to defend our democracy on January 6th, the investigators who’ve worked tirelessly to uncover the facts in the years following, and the Justice Department officials who continue working to hold the perpetrators accountable.
