Three years ago, insurrectionists stormed our nation’s Capitol – provoked by disgraced former President Trump and several Congressional Republicans – in a (thankfully) unsuccessful attempt to upend our democracy by overturning the 2020 Presidential election and blocking the transfer of power to President Biden.

January 6, 2021 was one of the darkest days in our nation's history.

After that horrific assault on the Capitol, it became very clear that our democracy is something we cannot take for granted. The truth is that our democracy is fragile, and we must be vigilant in defending it.

In addition to holding those responsible for the Capitol attack accountable to the fullest extent, it is critical that we root out the dangerous extremism that fueled the insurrection. It has deeply infected our politics, and decisive action is needed to restore not only America’s faith in our government, but all those who look to us as a beacon of a free and fair society.

John, the January 6 insurrection shook our nation and revealed the many fault lines threatening to break apart democracy as we know it. But, it also showed our resilience and our resolve.

We must continue to protect and strengthen our democracy for future generations, and ensure that nothing like January 6 ever happens again. As your Congressman, I will continue to stand in the way of MAGA extremists, but the scope of this goes beyond Congress.

We each have an important role to play in this mission, John: As we approach this year’s presidential election, we must all have a simple, vital test for every candidate: will you uphold your oath to defend our democratic republic from all enemies, foreign or domestic – and did you do that in the face of the January 6th insurrection?
