Three years ago today, right about this time, I was wrapping up a Zoom meeting in my home office when I heard my husband calling from another room, urging me to come quickly.
We watched together in horror as deadly violence unfolded at our nation’s Capitol Building.
The country had just lived through four challenging years of a Trump presidency. As Election Day neared in 2020, we had wondered if this man, should he lose a second term, would refuse a peaceful transition of power. Watching his supporters storm barricades, attack police, break windows, and raise a Trump flag at the Capitol on January 6th, we had our answer.
It became clear to me that day that we had reached a fork in the road – as a people, and as a country.
What we’ve learned from the January 6th commission since then is that this wild, unruly plan came dangerously close to succeeding.
Fast forward to 2024:
Although there is no evidence of voter fraud affecting the results in 2020 or any recent elections, Nick LaLota consistently promotes the misconceptions and lies about election integrity pushed by Trump and his allies to cast doubt on the 2020 election.
LaLota has also given his full-throated support to Mike Johnson, a key architect of Congressional Republicans’ efforts to overturn the election results.
Republicans did not control the House majority on January 6, 2021. Today they do.
The former president and his loyal foot soldiers in Congress have had three years to formulate a better plan – and we know where their Speaker stands.
We are now at another fork in the road, John. Either a GOP-controlled House led by an insurrection-sympathizing Speaker will be in position to overturn an election next January, or Democrats will take back control of the House and protect our democracy once again.
