Friends,
On Sunday, January 3rd, 2021, I took my oath of office and officially became a Member of Congress.
Three days later, on Wednesday, January 6th, I hid under my seat in the House Gallery, wearing a gas mask and waiting for a chance to run to safety, hoping that insurrectionists wouldn’t break down the doors.
I came of age in the era of mass shootings. Like other millennials and kids today, I’m used to active shooter drills. And when I served at the State Department and the UN and traveled around the world for work, I was used to close calls and threats of violence. But January 6th – in the middle of the United States Capitol – I thought I was going to die.
In the immediate aftermath of the attack, we saw people from both sides of the aisle come together to denounce the violence and destruction. But it wasn’t long before Donald Trump was rewriting history, and his followers went right along with him.
That’s why it’s so important that we continue to tell the truth about what happened.
January 6th was a deadly and terrifying attack on Congress – incited by Donald Trump in an attempt to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power – and an assault on the pillars of our democracy.
On this anniversary I recommit to my role, as a Congresswoman, to protect and preserve our democracy.
I’m also more determined than ever before to ensure that Trump, and anyone else who attempts to spin the awful events of January 6th into their own un-American narrative, never gets re-elected.
The insurrection was my first Wednesday in Congress. On my second Wednesday, we voted to impeach President Trump. And on my third, we celebrated the inauguration of President Biden.
Now, three years later, after so many incredible accomplishments from the Biden-Harris Administration, we’re heading into an election year that represents an existential fight for our country. I'm proud to show up for that fight every day, and I’m so glad you’re here to fight with me.
Thanks for reading. Onward!
-Sara
