John,

Today marks three years since the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol when a violent mob attacked Capitol Police and D.C. metro police officers to forcefully break into the Capitol—all to do Trump’s bidding: stop the certification of the 2020 election.

As a Navy veteran, nothing makes me more unnerved than when our freedom, democracy, and the peaceful rule of law is directly attacked or undermined here at home. Those who have served in the armed forces have seen it all across the globe, from the most repressive fascism to galling political corruption that keeps societies with unlimited potential impoverished so the few that call the shots can gain.

I’ll just be honest here: the January 6 Capitol riot not only infuriated me—it scared me.

The idea that this could happen here is frightening. The fact that the President of the United States was directly involved and encouraged it in real time by begrudgingly telling the rioters to “go home” and calling them “very special” while eagerly watching the riot unfold on TV at the White House.

The problem, in my opinion, is with the culture that accepts Trump and the GOP’s obvious lies. Whether tacit or explicit—promoting baseless allegations that your political opponents somehow stole a national election occurring across dozens of competitive state-run voting processes is just as unforgivable as using an American flag to beat and subdue a police officer to gain entry to the Capitol.

Accountability is what we need, but not just legal accountability, political too. That’s why I am running against a Trump ally here in Ohio: undoing the damage that he and others in Trump’s Republican Party have done to our democracy and our government is going to take all of us coming together.

I truly appreciate all of your support as I meet my voters face to face and run this campaign the way it should be, leading by example as I was taught in the Navy.
