It is my hope that your new year is off to a wonderful start. Before heading back to Washington next week, I wanted to share an important update with you regarding my work to make prescription drugs more affordable.
The start of 2024 marked the one year anniversary since my plan to cap the cost of insulin at $35 a month for seniors on Medicare went into effect. This was a landmark moment for seniors who depend on insulin to live healthy lives. Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act and our sustained pressure on drugmakers, every major insulin manufacturer in the nation has since announced price caps and savings programs to dramatically lower the cost of insulin for patients. Effective January 1, 2024, Sanofi was the third and final drugmaker to implement $35 price caps for insulin.
This week's news brings needed relief for families who have struggled with the cost of health care for diabetes, and I will continue to champion policies in Congress which will lower prescription drug prices for all Americans. There is no reason why a lifesaving drug that has been around for 100 years should bankrupt American families.
