Hi –
I’ll never forget the January 6 insurrection. Just like so many Americans, three years ago I watched in horror as mobs invaded the Capitol building with a goal to overturn the election results.
Since that day, right-wing politicians have continued their assault on our democracy, continuing to challenge the long-settled results of the 2020 election, introducing voter suppression bills in Congress and state legislatures across the country, and threatening the hard-working election administrators who ensure our right to vote.
But because of the hard-fought electoral victories we’ve won here in Pennsylvania, we didn’t see a single anti-democracy bill pass the legislature in 2023.
Our pro-environment and pro-democracy leaders in Harrisburg held the line against partisan attacks last year, and the Shapiro Administration even expanded access to voting by allowing residents to register to vote when they are at the DMV.
But at the same time that these leaders are protecting our right to vote, Pennsylvania officials who were part of the Big Lie still hold elected office . Congressmen Scott Perry and Mike Kelly along with state Sen. Doug Mastriano are just a few of the dozens of sitting Pennsylvania lawmakers who tried to overturn the election results leading up to and on January 6.
If we are going to protect our democracy this year and in years to come, we cannot let down our defenses. We must head into 2024 strong to expand voting rights, defeat attacks, and elect more pro-democracy officials who are going to hold the line. Can you pitch in $10.00 or whatever you can to support our campaign to protect our democracy? [[link removed]]
The same extremist forces behind January 6 and the attempts to deny the 2020 election results have spent the last three years attempting to systematically dismantle our voting rights. This year alone, at least 14 states have enacted laws making it harder to vote, disproportionately impacting voters of color.
Pennsylvania wasn’t one of these states – but we have seen our fair share of anti-democracy bills introduced over the last few years, from proposals to gerrymander our state courts, to wasting taxpayer dollars on fraudulent election audits. While our pro-democracy majority in the state House helped us block these threats, our numbers in the State Senate make it challenging to remove barriers that prevent disenfranchised communities from voting.
If we’re going to realize our vision of a fair and free democracy, we must elect the lawmakers who are going to champion pro-voter policies and get them across the finish line. Truly, I need you in our corner if we’re going to get this done. Please, help us make sure that January 6 never happens again with a gift of $10.00 or whatever you can give. [[link removed]]
We know we can do great things when we’re all engaged and making our voices heard. Thank you for making your voice heard at this pivotal moment.
