Happy New Year, John!
When we announced a few days before the New Year that a generous (real) individual donor would match up to $30,000 in online contributions, we knew we were setting an ambitious goal.
But WFP members like you answered the call. And we are happy to report back that, thanks to you, we not only met but exceeded our goal!
Deadlines and goals like these are important because grassroots contributions from members like you are what fuels so much of our organizing work. And just a few days into 2024, we are already seeing the impact of that work across the country:
This week, Kendra Brooks and Nicolas O’Rourke were sworn into office as WFP members of the Philadelphia City Council! Following their historic victories in November, there are now NO at-large Republicans on the City Council. Philadelphia is now a two-party town: Democrats, and the Working Families Party.
Next week, new Virginia state legislators will be sworn into office including WFP-endorsed State Senators Danica Roem, Aaron Rouse, and Stella Pekarsky, and Delegates Nadarius Clark, Josh Thomas, Josh Cole, Michael Feggans, and Kelly Fowler. Their victories along with others helped flip full control of the state legislature to Democrats — and will help put a stop to Governor Glenn Youngkin’s anti-abortion, right-wing agenda in 2024.
And right before the new year, a majority of the Wisconsin Supreme Court struck down Republicans' heavily gerrymandered legislative maps, a huge win for democracy in a key battleground state. WFP members helped get out the vote for Justice Janet Protasiewicz in Wisconsin last year, and she ended up providing the decisive vote in a 4-3 decision that will help ensure fair representation for Wisconsinites.
All of these victories will have a real impact on people's lives, and none of them would be possible without you. But as we begin a new year, we know even tougher fights lie ahead.
We have a bold agenda for 2024: doing our part to end Republican control of Congress, defending and electing our champions, and continuing to build and win governing power by and for working class people of all races, all while blocking the authoritarian right from power. Thanks to your generous support, we’re entering the new year better equipped and better prepared to get the job done.
