Colleagues and Friends,
In these first days of the new year, we are mindful of the extraordinary challenges ahead in 2024, and we are off to a busy start.
LDAD has released the first phase of our ongoing efforts to analyze how democracy is under attack at the state level: Marching Towards Autocracy: How States Are Failing Democracy – And What We Can Do About It.
We encourage you to share this important information with your own networks, to ensure the public and the media understand the extent to which democracy is already at risk within our states.
Arizona, one of the states featured in our report, has been the subject of litigation and investigative reporting for its ineptly executed audit of the 2020 presidential election results. The Arizona Republic played a key role in disclosing the efforts of various public officials to perpetuate the false narrative of election fraud. LDAD’s executive director was recently interviewed by the paper for its analysis of these events: It Took Years for Truth About Election 'Audit' to Emerge. Why the Arizona Republic Kept Fighting.
Today’s edition of The Fulcrum features an opinion article by LDAD’s executive director advocating for leaders in academia to speak out with moral clarity in times of crisis. The article argues that:
[A]cademic principles of free expression should not prevent a university from speaking with unequivocal clarity in matters of moral imperative. … Indeed, the highest calling of higher education should be the ability to both model courageous behavior and encourage civil discourse in ways that can serve as conflict-resolution lessons throughout life.
For those who did not make a year-end contribution, we hope you will kick-off the new year with a donation. Your support is critical to our work.
