Friend — three years ago, a violent mob of armed insurrectionists, many of them proudly displaying symbols of White supremacist hate, attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Unfortunately, the MAGA movement’s attack on democracy didn’t stop with their assault on the Capitol — it quietly moved into state legislatures and onto elections boards. Now, Donald Trump and his followers are fighting to return to power so that they can heighten their attack on democracy with the full power of the presidency at their disposal.

The stakes couldn’t be higher for our freedom, our future, and the health and safety of our communities. That’s why LCV and our movement are campaigning to advance pro-democracy reforms, defend against voter suppression, and support leaders who will protect democracy.

Even if you are not in D.C., you can help us protect democracy by taking action today — tell your representatives in Congress to pass the Freedom to Vote Act. This bill is critical to defend against threats to our democracy: it would create national standards to protect the freedom to vote, improve our broken campaign finance system, combat election subversion, and ban partisan gerrymandering in congressional elections.

As a 50-year old environmental organization with voting and elections at the center of our theory of change, LCV has long understood how essential a free, fair, and equitable democracy is to protecting people and the planet. LCV and our sister organization, LCV Education Fund, are leaders in democracy and civic engagement, while our 30+ state affiliates have become critical leaders in efforts to strengthen voting rights at the state and local levels.

Collectively, we’ve helped register more than 1.7 million voters, won ballot measures on redistricting and automatic voter registration, and worked with election officials to expand access to the ballot. In 2023 alone, our movement helped to pass or protect more than 150 pro-democracy policies nationwide and to confirm 66 pro-democracy judges to federal courts. Our Democracy for All program is one of the largest and most dynamic civic engagement efforts in the nation and the largest, most impactful program within the environmental movement.
