Mark Reynolds to volunteers: Do what's appropriate for you
in these trying times
In the space of a few short weeks, the world as we know it has drastically changed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Those changes have had a profound impact on individuals, businesses, and advocacy organizations like CCL. We have cancelled our remaining regional conferences, and we advise that chapters meet online rather than in person. In a new message to CCL volunteers, CCL Executive Director Mark Reynolds tells everyone to do what’s appropriate for their circumstance: “This has always been an organization that was built on trust, trusting that volunteers would make the right decisions about what they should do. It may be that you’re in a position where your full-fledged climate advocacy is the right thing to do. And if that’s the case, we will have recommendations of things you can do to take action. But it might also be the case that what you ought to have your attention on is you, your family, your community… We trust that whatever is right for you, you’ll make the right decision.”
If you missed our national call Saturday with communications expert Hannah Pickard, you can watch a recording here. Hannah supports climate communicators in 184 institutions in 38 states, and she told our volunteers that “it is our responsibility to be spreading climate hope.” |

Suspending the March fundraiser
The difficult circumstances we’re facing with the spread of COVID-19 are unprecedented, with events unfolding rapidly. In many areas across the country, non-essential businesses have shut down, schools are closed, and people have been ordered to stay home. In many ways, the last few weeks have turned our lives upside down. We hope that during these formidable challenges, you can count on your Citizens’ Climate community for solidarity and support. Our connections with each other and the positive actions we take, though now happening remotely, can still bolster us during uncertain times. We have decided to suspend our March fundraising campaign at this time. Implementing an effective and long-lasting climate solution is crucial to protect our planet, but we want you to take care of yourself and your loved ones first and foremost. Your sense of financial security is also important to us, so we don’t want you to feel obligated to make a donation right now. Please know that your time, energy and talents will always be invaluable to our organization. We cannot thank you enough for your commitment to creating a more livable planet for us all. |

Training topics
In light of COVID-19 causing us to shift to remote work, CCL has created a new forum category to offer technical support. Think of it as CCL's own "geek squad." Ask any questions you may have about setting up your computer, using Zoom, and more. Those with technical support experience are also encouraged to weigh in with your suggestions. CCL also offers two ongoing learning series: Citizens' Climate University for existing volunteers, and Core Volunteer Training for new volunteers. Here are the next few training sessions you can join: 3/19 Citizens' Climate University: How to Host Remote/Online Meetings - With caution being urged about public gatherings, online meetings are a way to protect people’s health. Learn how to host a meeting on Zoom. Learn more. 3/24 Core Volunteer Training: Communicating With Progressives - What are progressive groups saying about the Energy Innovation Act, and how should we talk to them about it? CCL State Level Coordinator Jamie DeMarco offers advice. Learn more. 3/26 Citizens' Climate University: Generating News Coverage Training - Want to see more stories about your CCL chapter in local media? CCL Communications Director Flannery Winchester will tell you how to make it happen. Learn more. To see upcoming topics and past trainings, visit the Training Topics page of CCL Community. |

Featured Action Team: Led by Rob Byron, Lori Byron, and Lisa Del Buono, the CCL Health Action Team's mission is to secure endorsements from local and national medical and health-related organizations. The team also educates ourselves, CCL, and health/healthcare/research professionals on how climate impacts health. On the team’s March 23 call at 8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT, the guest speaker will be Dr. Andrew Lewandowski (pictured), who will explain how to talk to every patient and family about climate and not lose your patients. Dr. Lewandowski is a pediatrician in Wisconsin who educates people about the impacts of climate change on human health and advocates for equitable climate adaptation and mitigation solutions. The team will also touch on how the current public health situation will influence their upcoming meetings with their members of Congress. You can learn about, join, and get call details on the Health Action Team page.
