B.C. Tackled Housing Crisis on Multiple Fronts in 2023

As Canada faced an ongoing housing shortage throughout the year, British Columbia moved cautiously forward on several fronts to reduce roadblocks to finding a home.

This article from the Journal of Commerce highlights some of the key events related to housing including the new Permitting Strategy for Housing, housing targets for municipalities under the Housing Supply Act and the introduction of a new standardized set of designs for small-scale, multi-unit homes.

Application Period Open for the 2024 CHBA Association Leadership Awards

Each year, the Canadian Home Builders' Association recognizes the outstanding work of dedicated volunteer members — as well as the leadership shown by our local and provincial HBAs — through its National Association Leadership Awards.

Categories for the national awards recognize Member of the Year, HBA of the Year, EO of the Year and the Community Service Award.

Recognizing World-Class Projects at the Local Level

The HAVAN Awards for Housing Excellence program is celebrating 15 years of recognizing excellence in new-home construction, renovation, and design in Metro Vancouver.

The deadline to submit a project is coming up quickly on January 15, 2024.

The 2024 HAVAN Awards feature 63 categories, including new home construction, renovation, interior design and energy-labelled homes.

January 2024 Public Hearing on Plumped Washrooms on Construction Sites
WorkSafeBC

Next week, WorkSafeBC will be holding a virtual public hearing on proposed amendments to the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulation including reviewing feedback on the proposal to require plumped washroom facilities on construction sites.

The virtual public hearing will be streamed live on January 10, 2024, in two sessions. The first will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the second from 3 to 5 p.m.

There is still time to provide feedback on the proposed OHS amendments as the public consultation period is open until January 12.

New Return-to-Work Requirements Start
Journal of Commerce

New rules concerning return-to-work requirements for injured workers in British Columbia are now in effect.

The requirements, which began Jan. 1, will support a more effective and fair workers' compensation system in the province and help restore workers to their previous employment status after suffering an injury on the job, a Government of B.C. release stated.

All employers and injured workers in B.C. will have a new legal duty to cooperate both with each other and WorkSafeBC to make sure workers can return to their previous jobs or other suitable work.

New Fee Schedule Now in Effect
Technical Safety BC

Technical Safety BC is reminding its clients that the new fee schedules for 2024–2025 are now in effect.

Fees are set to recover costs related to safety oversight, including educational programs; public safety campaigns such as recalls, hazard awareness, and safety alerts; investigating incidents; assessing equipment and systems; and finding ways to innovate and improve programs and products for our safety partners and clients.
