John, my name is Kristen McDonald Rivet. I’m a Michigan state Senator, lifelong advocate for kids and families, and proud mom of 6. And today, I’m launching my campaign for Congress in Michigan’s 8th District.

Experts say this race is a pure tossup after Democratic Rep. Dan Kildee announced his retirement, so I’m going to need your help from the very beginning to build a winning campaign. I’ll explain more about why I decided to run for Congress, but if you’re already with me, I hope you’ll split a contribution between my campaign and Fight for Progress to get this campaign off the ground:

I’m running to restore what I call The Michigan Dream: that if you work hard, you can own a home, pay your bills, put a little away for retirement, and maybe drive your family to Disney World every now and then.

I know this dream firsthand. Growing up in Portland, my dad worked construction, often clocking in 70 to 80 hours a week. When the construction season slowed down, and it got cold, he worked snow removal to make ends meet. Like many people in this district, he showered at the end of his work day, not before it. Dad wasn’t afraid to get calluses on his hands through a tough day’s work. Thanks to him and my mom, my sisters and I were the first in our family to go to college, and I have been working to uplift families like ours ever since.

Unfortunately, today, the Michigan Dream has become out of reach for too many Michiganders. Combine that with extremists making us less safe by trying to take away the right to abortion and refusing to address the epidemic of gun violence, and it’s clear that we need to send real leaders to D.C. who we can trust to solve problems our community faces.

I have spent my adult life fighting to make it just a little easier for working families, like the one I grew up in, to achieve the Michigan Dream. Throughout my career and now in the state Senate, I’ve helped improve employment and educational opportunities for children across our state, pass historic tax cuts for working families, and enact public policy that’s helped level the playing field.

I’m running for Congress because I am ready to help give hardworking families across the Great Lakes Bay Region the tools to succeed.

But I can’t get there on my own. This is going to be one of the most competitive House races in the country – one that will determine whether or not Democrats take back the House. I’m counting on supporters like you to power this campaign from day one. So John, will you split a contribution today between my campaign and Fight for Progress to launch my campaign for Congress?
