John, libraries across the United States provide important services to millions, improve our literacy rates, and serve as community centers. Unfortunately, public libraries and their employees are facing increasingly common and violent threats due to dangerous right-wing extremism
One of the most significant and concerning of these threats is the rise of book bans and censorship attempts at school and local libraries. These attempts to undermine freedom of information attack our rights to access literature and educational materials that showcase diverse perspectives and ideas.
Since their creation, libraries have always been a place for the fostering of exchanging ideas and learning. These reckless attempts to censor and limit access to information will have devastating impacts on the fabric of our nation’s democracy.
That’s why we’re asking you today: sign our urgent petition to demand that Congress protect public libraries!
The safety of library workers and patrons is at risk. We demand that Congress take meaningful action to ensure that libraries can continue to be safe spaces for everyone. Congress must allocate funds for the implementation of security measures and establish a protocol to defend libraries from partisan censorship and political interference. Libraries must be free to serve their communities without fear of being targeted.
Libraries are the heart of our communities, fostering learning, exploration, and connection. Defending them goes beyond preserving books— it's about upholding our democratic values and the fundamental right to knowledge.
Today, we call on Congress to take immediate action to protect our public libraries from these radical threats and preserve these safe, inclusive, and accessible spaces for all. Our democracy depends on it.
Join us and sign the petition to tell Congress: Protect our public libraries!
Thank you,
Democratic Values
