After eight long years of climate change deniers running the show in Congress, the annual 2019 National Environmental Scorecard from our partners at the League of Conservation Voters shows that the new pro-environment majority wasted no time passing legislation to protect our air, water, lands and wildlife, and to combat the climate crisis. Not only is this the most pro-environment House, this current House is also the most diverse in our nation’s history. Leaders in Congress today are more representative of our country's racial, religious, and gender diversity. They are also innovative climate action champions who have centered their communities’ needs in their work, and promoted legislation to protect our public lands, safeguard our water, and advance a clean energy economy. We were so excited to see that Washington leaders like Senator Patty Murray and Senator Maria Cantwell led the fight to ensure that Washingtonians’ health and environment were put first in Congress. Knowing how our elected officials vote is core to a functioning democracy and protecting our planet. That’s where the 2019 National Environmental Scorecard comes in. LCV tallied the most critical environmental votes in Congress from the last year so you can know exactly how your representatives voted on issues that impact our communities and environment. As 2019 was the second hottest year on record, the stakes for our environment and our health have never been higher. But that didn’t seem to matter one bit to anti-environment leaders in Congress who catered to polluters at every opportunity throughout 2019. Senator McConnell refused to act on hundreds of important House-passed bills, including many pro-environment measures found in the 2019 National Environmental Scorecard, and instead he has let them sit in his ever-growing legislative graveyard. Despite the challenges, our environmental champions in Congress held their ground and fought back every step of the way to protect our fundamental rights to clean air and safe drinking water.
