Sugar industry ramping up "Dirty Money" contributions ahead of 2024 election     Big Sugar spent millions in 2023. Here's where the money went While fourth-quarter totals aren't yet available, state data shows that from January to the end of September 2023, U.S. Sugar, Florida Crystals and the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative collectively spent $2.76 million in "dirty money," political contributions ahead of the 2024 election. Almost all the money went to PACs, political action committees that then parcel out the funds to individual candidates and other PACs. And PACs benefitting some of the state's most powerful politicians also raked in big bucks. It's all part of Big Sugar's strategy to make sure they have sympathetic sycophants in Tallahassee. A while back we told you how Jacqui Thurlow-Lippisch, perhaps the staunchest clean-water advocate on the South Florida Water Management District Governing Board, lost her seat after Gov. Ron DeSantis renominated her but the Florida Senate declined to confirm her. Months later, Thurlow-Lippisch's former seat remains empty. So when will Gov. Ron DeSantis fill it, and what type of candidate will he fill it with? We take a closer look in a recent blog post.
