Dear Friend, Yesterday, I talked to you about the crisis of medical debt and the need for universal healthcare. That issue is extremely important, but the problems of our healthcare system go even deeper.
I have often said that we don’t have a healthcare system in America: we have a sickness care system. We treat symptoms once sickness already occurs, but we don’t ask why so many Americans are sick in the first place — far more than citizens of comparably wealthy countries — and we don’t take preventative measures to deal with the root causes of illness before it occurs.
These root causes have to do with food policies pushing unhealthy and overly-processed food over healthy food. They have to do with environmental policies allowing the contamination of the air we breathe and the water we drink. They have to do with economic policies leading to people being overworked and constantly stressed.
Our healthcare system is based on profit over people, and this incentivizes Big Pharma to allow people to get sick and then treat their symptoms pharmaceutically. Stopping people from getting sick in the first place is bad for Big Pharma profits, but it is necessary for a healthy society.
Under my Whole Health Plan, we are going to deal with all realms of policy that affect people's health, from food to climate to the economy. And we are also going to create a true healthcare system – one that provides preventative care to deal with the root causes of sickness before it occurs.
