Hi there,

I’m checking in during this unprecedented time of uncertainty to assure you that you’re not alone -- we will get through this together.

It won’t be easy. Not only is there an immediate and grave health threat, but there is the pain and confusion of isolation as we all take the responsible steps of social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19.

In any other kind of national disaster, we would rush to gather together. If it were a flood, we would be gathering to prepare sandbags. If it were a recovery from an earthquake, we might organize fundraisers and benefit concerts to support the victims. In the all-too-common mass shootings recently, Americans have stood in line to donate blood.

But this time, we must do something truly new: find a way to come together even while being kept physically apart.

Even if we have to do it in new, uncomfortable ways, it is more important now than ever for us to act. This begins with looking out for the most vulnerable.

In addition to seeking out community-based efforts to ensure food and child care are available to those who have suddenly lost resources they depend on, we can also advocate for needed policies.

This includes urging our senators and representatives to act swiftly on measures including free coronavirus testing for everyone who needs it, paid emergency leave, and major expenditures to support American workers impacted by the economic shock.

Will you call your senators right now? Tell them to put partisanship aside, put our families and communities first, and pass needed legislation. The number is 202-224-3121.

There will be much more to do in the days and weeks ahead. I am keeping this entire community of supporters in my prayers, and we will keep in touch as we find more and new ways through advocacy, communication, and action to support one another and to help our communities and country get through this.

Take care and thank you,

Pete
