According to a December 2023 poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, immigration is poised to become the most critical political issue for Americans in 2024. The poll reveals that 35% of respondents cite immigration and the border wall as their top concern, marking an increase from 27% the previous year.
However, a notable exception arises when considering the ongoing conflict with nuclear-armed Russia, which has garnered significant attention. The poll indicates that foreign policy narrowly edges out immigration, with 38% of respondents identifying it as a top issue. This distinction is particularly noteworthy as foreign policy captures the attention of both Republicans and Democrats, making it a largely non-partisan concern.
The breakdown of the issue's importance among political affiliations reveals nuances. While immigration holds the top spot for 55% of Republicans, surpassing foreign policy at 46%, inflation at 41%, and the economy at 32%, Democrats are less unified in their prioritization. Only 22% of Democrats consider immigration a top issue, contributing to its slightly lower overall score of 35%.
President Joe Biden's approach to migration has overtaken other pressing issues, with inflation scoring 30% and the economy at 24%. Importantly, the poll underscores the impact of Biden's policies, which have contributed to challenges like inflation and economic concerns by importing a significant number of wage-cutting, rent-spiking migrants.
In essence, while immigration emerges as a focal point for a substantial portion of the American population, foreign policy takes precedence overall due to its broad appeal across party lines.
The predominant influence of migration within GOP politics significantly restricts GOP legislators from engaging in favorable migration deals with President Biden.
For instance, Biden is leveraging anticipated funds for the Ukraine war with Russia to secure congressional funding for increased migration in 2024. Despite this tactic, the establishment GOP has resisted, voting against the combined funding request for migration and Ukraine.
The growing emphasis on foreign policy as a public concern likely stems from Biden's endorsement of the war against Russia, which, in 2022, extended across the Ukraine-Russian border to annex Russian-populated areas in eastern Ukraine, including the Crimean peninsula. The financial commitment to impede the Russian advance has exceeded $75 billion.
The escalating public apprehension regarding migration began gaining momentum in 2014, surged in 2016, and has intensified this year due to Biden's pro-migration policies.
The heightened national attention on migration was spotlighted on January 2, coinciding with reports that Biden's pro-migration border chief facilitated the entry of over 300,000 migrants across the southern border in December 2023 alone.
It's essential to note that this record influx doesn't encompass the approximately 50,000 "gotaways" who clandestinely cross the border each month. Consequently, Biden's migration statistics for December 2023 surpassed the number of U.S. babies born in the same month.
