Kevin McCarthy, the former Speaker of the House and one of my main antagonists in the Congress, announced in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that he is resigning.
After fifteen humiliating votes to scrape and claw his way to the Speaker’s gavel, McCarthy immediately used his political capital to attack me — removing me from the Intelligence Committee. Vowing to the California Republican Party convention that I could “never” become California’s senator. Leading my censure under the personal threat of Donald Trump.
But I’m still standing, and he's the one who lost the faith of his caucus and is now leaving Congress.
I could go on for a long time about why McCarthy’s departure from the House is no loss to the state or country.
But here’s what I’m thinking about today:
McCarthy is all too symbolic of a Republican leadership that has no real ideology except the pursuit of power and will tie itself into knots trying to please Donald Trump in order to acquire power and hold onto it.
The MAGA movement is now willing to eviscerate the civil service, mobilize the military domestically, weaponize the justice department to go after political opponents, and terminate the Constitution if they lose the next election. These are all positions their party leader has articulated, and they are still devoted to him.
The only way we are going to move forward as a country is by defeating this anti-democratic cult of personality and fighting for our democracy and an economy that works for everyone.
And f riend , with less than 75 days until our primary, we need to engage right now, as the MAGA crowd tries to stop me from reaching the Senate.
McCarthy will have a lot of time — and money — to meddle in our race
in the homestretch to fulfill his promise that I can never be California's senator. We cannot — and will not — let his brand of politics win.
Please, will you pitch in $25 to Democracy Defense Action and my campaign for the United States Senate, so we can move our country forward and protect our democracy for the next generation? [[link removed]]
Thank you very much. And farewell, Kevin McCarthy.
