Year In Review!
*Fellow Hoosiers,*
*As we begin the new year, we at the Office of Attorney General are emboldened by our strong record of success in 2023.*
*We are more dedicated than ever to our ongoing quest to protecting your individual liberties, safeguarding your rights and upholding the rule of law. *
*For us, 2023 was literally a record-setting year. We returned more than $80 million in unclaimed property to hard-working Hoosiers — decimating the previous record of $66.9 million set in 2014.*
*We continued our record of success holding criminals accountable – upholding convictions of child abusers, murderers and rapists to keep Hoosier families safe. Our amazing litigation team also won 100% of jury trials in which it defended the state’s interests.*
*We protected consumers from illicit business practices, data privacy violations and ID theft, obtaining nearly $1 billion in settlements for Hoosiers — including hundreds of thousands from annoying and illegal robocallers.*
*We stood up to Big Tech for deceptive practices and abusive violations of Hoosiers’ privacy – most recently announcing a $700 million settlement with Google.*
*We resisted woke “environmental, social and governance” (ESG) policies designed to misspend Hoosiers’ hard-earned retirement investments.*
*We fought back against federal government overreach to protect your Second Amendment rights, defend women under attack in the name of diversity, and safeguard hard working Hoosier’s jobs threatened by the EPA’s out of control “green” energy policies. *
*And we distinguished our office as a strong advocate and ally for the rights and well-being of tenants living in properties not adequately maintained by corporate landlords.*
*As the top legal officer for the State of Indiana, we successfully defended the historic new pro-life law passed by the Indiana General Assembly — a statute designed to save the lives of more than 90 percent of the babies who previously could have been aborted prior to the law’s enactment.*
*And, of course, we continued our staunch support for parents’ rights to oversee the education and upbringing of their children. *
*This year, you can rest assured that our hard work on your behalf will continue unabated. Stay tuned for our 2023 annual report in February.*

Returning Money To Hardworking Hoosiers
AG Rokita had the opportunity to help Hoosiers find Unclaimed Property at the State Fair. In 2023, our office returned a record setting $80 million in unclaimed property to hardworking Hoosiers and still have millions waiting to be returned to its rightful owners. Go to IndianaUnclaimed.gov to see if you have money waiting for you.

Keeping Criminals Behind Bars
Our appeals team handles thousands of civil and criminal cases each year and continued the office's record of success holding criminals accountable. One of those cases was selected for the Court of Appeals traveling oral argument, or Appeals on Wheels, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Hundreds of middle schoolers, high schoolers, and law students were in attendance to learn and watch how our civic process works. They even got to ask the judges questions after the argument was over. Our team argued to uphold the conviction of a murderer and will always fight to keep criminals behind bars.

Stopping Robocalls
Thanks to our Consumer Protection team, we stopped Startel Communications LLC, Wanda Hall, and Rapid Eagle Inc. — companies that allegedly helped robocallers make over 4.8 million phone calls to Hoosiers and hundreds of millions of calls to other states across the United States. Rapid Eagle Inc. LLC agreed to follow state and federal laws on telephone privacy and pay $150,000 to the State of Indiana and Startel Communication LLC and Wanda Hall agreed to leave the robocalling and telecom industry forever.

Safeguarding Consumers
This year, AG Rokita announced a $700 million agreement with Google in a lawsuit over Google’s anticompetitive conduct with the Google Play Store. A bipartisan group of 53 attorneys general sued Google in 2021 alleging that they unlawfully monopolized the markets for Android app distribution and in-app payment processing. This settlement demonstrates our commitment to protect consumers and hold companies accountable.

Protecting The 2A
AG Rokita had the opportunity to speak to the Clarksville Liberty Belles and other groups like them throughout 2023 about Indiana's Gun Owners' Bill of Rights. He also discussed the many actions being taken against the Biden admin to protect our Second Amendment and other liberties. With freedom comes responsibility – and the work of these groups to spread general wisdom of gun ownership among women as well as focus on teaching the safe handling of firearms is so important.

Protecting Tenants
AG Rokita joined the dedicated and passionate members of his Homeowner Protection unit to conduct an inspection of Lugar Tower Apartments. While there, Rokita had the opportunity to ask questions often and listen to their concerns. They also met with the Indianapolis Housing Agency to discuss and see firsthand the steps they’ve taken to improve the living conditions of the property.

Empowering Parents
During National Teacher Appreciation Week, AG Rokita met with educators, parents, and students from St. Thomas More Elementary School - where he attended as a kid in Munster, Indiana. He got to talk about his work on the Parents' Bill of Rights, which is a roadmap that empowers parents to direct their children’s education and upbringing by ensuring they know legal rights and responsibilities.

Addressing Lawlessness At The Border
AG Rokita continued his work with law enforcement leaders to address the lawlessness, created by the Biden admin, at our southern border and the horrific impact it’s having on Hoosiers. Indiana is addressing this crisis head on as the first non-border state to sue the federal government for its open border policies.

Preventing Medicaid Fraud
AG Rokita was honored to co-host the 8th Annual Midwest Medical Fraud Symposium. Medical fraud costs our country tens of billions of dollars per year and hurts everyday consumers. We’re all working together to ensure this fraudulent activity is stopped and Hoosiers are protected.

Honoring Our Veterans
On National Wreaths Across America Day, AG Rokita joined hundreds of Hoosiers at the 'Field of Valor' inside Crown Hill Cemetery to honor our service members and remember our fallen heroes. He said we will never forget the sacrifices they've made for our nation. He also thanked the amazing organizations like Wreaths Across America and the Indiana Motor Truck Association, and all the people who worked tirelessly to make this ceremony happen in locations around the country.
