The Sentencing Project Releases Annual Report

I'm pleased to announce the release of The Sentencing Project's 2019 Annual Report. It documents our contributions to a rapidly growing consensus that we must reduce the country's misguided reliance on mass incarceration.

Among the highlights of our work and impact this past year, The Sentencing Project:

  • Achieved substantial milestones in our national Campaign to End Life Imprisonment and cap sentences at 20 years. The campaign received high-profile media coverage, including the Washington Post and The Daily Show, and endorsements from civil rights and civil liberties organizations.

  • Witnessed the impact of our work in the strong positions that Democratic presidential candidates have taken throughout their campaigns on criminal justice reform. Many incorporated our research findings and policy goals into their position papers, messaging, and media interviews.

  • Collaborated on campaigns in Washington, DC to gain City Council support for voting rights of people in prison and for a “second look” policy to provide resentencing consideration for individuals whose crimes were committed under the age of 25.

As excited as we are that the political climate is changing, we recognize how far we still have to go. It will take an unwavering and active commitment by all of us to reach our goal of a fair and truly equitable justice system.
