Jack, politicians shouldn’t be able to pick their voters. However, that’s exactly what Republicans are doing when they rig legislative maps in their favor.

Partisan gerrymandering is as undemocratic as it gets–illegally drawing a voting map that helps a political party–and Republicans have been shamelessly pursuing it in recent years.
  • In Alabama, a district court was forced to appoint a special master to draw three proposed redistricting plans after Republicans refused to comply with Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act to prevent the dilution of Black voting power.
  • Republican gerrymandering is so aggressive in Wisconsin that it is practically impossible for Democrats to gain control of the state legislature. Fortunately, after a years-long battle over partisan gerrymandering, Wisconsin's maps have been struck down and ordered to be redrawn by the state's Supreme Court.
  • North Carolina's Republican-controlled legislature took "unprecedented steps" to draw extreme partisan maps to lock in political power after Democrats made substantial electoral gains.
Republicans are rigging the maps because they can't win on their ideas. It's time Congress passed pro-democracy legislation like the For the People Act and the Freedom to Vote Act to stop the GOP's anti-democratic takeover of electoral maps.
