This is how the problem often starts: "If Jane pays £5 for 10 grapefruits, how many grapefruits does she get for £50?"

Answering the question, it transpires that the idealised world of mathematics is the only place you can buy 100 grapefruits and no-one bats an eyelid.

To find the answer to the question, many of us have been conditioned to use linear reasoning to assume that for 10 times as much money, Jane gets herself 10 times as many grapefruits.

The 100 greatest children's books of all time - BBC

Over the years, BBC Culture has conducted major polls of film and TV critics, experts and industry figures from around the world to decide on the greatest films and TV shows in a particular category: you may have seen our 100 greatest TV shows of the 21st Century in 2021, for example, or our 100 greatest films directed by women list in 2019. However, for this year's poll, we felt we needed to finally turn our attention to another art form so deeply embedded in all our lives – books. And there is no variety of books more embedded in them than children's literature – after all, whatever our pastimes as we grow older, many of us share in the joy of reading at a young age, in and out of school.

However, if great children's writing is not receiving the critical respect it should these days, then it certainly continues to make news headlines – which are, for better or worse, a reminder of how core it is to our existence. Recently for example, there's been the furore over the rewriting of Roald Dahl's novels for modern sensibilities – and more generally, the widespread concern over the growing movement in the US towards banning children's books, including many dealing with racial and LGBTQ+ themes. All in all, then, it felt like the right time to do our bit to both give children's literature its due and consider what has made and continues to make great children's writing. And so, in order to do that, we have decided to ask many experts a very simple question: what is the greatest children's book of all time?

The dark side of touch-screen tipping - BBC

It all started with an olive oil bundt cake. I was picking up a coffee at a local café after dropping off my daughter, when the cake caught my eye. It was pretty: sparingly iced with a light pink glaze and topped with a few delicate, edible flowers. I thought it'd be a nice surprise to bring home.

The barista boxed up the cake – $60 (£49), already far more than I'd wanted to pay – and swivelled the touch screen register so I could finish my transaction. I acted on autopilot, pressing the middle square to choose a 20% tip, and tapped my credit card to pay. It was only after the checkmark appeared on the screen – transaction successful! – I realised I'd tipped $18 (£15) for my morning latte, pastry and fancy baked good. I couldn't believe what I'd done.

As much as I blamed myself for the impulsive purchase, I couldn't help but curse the touch screen, too.

Nasa mission lines up to 'touch the Sun' - BBC News

It promises to be a remarkable moment in the history of space exploration.

A year from now, on 24 December, Nasa's Parker Solar Probe will race past the Sun at the astonishing speed of 195 km/s, or 435,000 mph.

No human-made object will have moved so fast nor, indeed, got so close to our star - just 6.1 million km, or 3.8 million miles from the Sun's "surface".
