Happy New Year! It is such a joy to welcome the New Year 2024.
As God’s children, we can look back on the previous year, with gratitude to our great God who shielded and preserved us from what was to many people, a challenging year in various ways. We are thankful for many things- for the gift of life, God’s protection and provision and the many blessings that we experience every day but most of all, we are thankful for Jesus our Saviour, whose birth we celebrated over Christmas.
I am conscious of the fact that Australia continues to face many social and economic challenges…The 24-hour news cycle is relentless. From extreme weather events, political instability and the daily challenges of interest rate hikes and making ends meet – we can sometimes feel overwhelmed. In addition to this there seem to be endless cycles of armed conflicts in various regions of the world, cities reduced to rubble, graphic images of violence and human suffering. Our world clearly needs hope, indeed it needs a Saviour.
I picture 2024 as an ocean - vast, wide, deep, rough, calm at times but still complex and unpredictable. No one can claim a full knowledge of what’s in the ocean. 90% of the ocean’s species are not yet discovered and over 80% of the ocean floor is currently unexplored, mapped or even seen by humans. It is only God, our creator who knows the depths of the ocean, all the creatures within it and the hidden wonders of its power (Job 38:8-11).
“Who shut up the sea behind doors
when it burst forth from the womb,
when I made the clouds its garment
and wrapped it in thick darkness,
when I fixed limits for it
and set its doors and bars in place,
when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther;
here is where your proud waves halt’?
Overwhelmed by God’s greatness, David declared in Psalm 139:8-10:
If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
Not only does God truly know what lies ahead in 2024, but he will guide you and protect you.
As we start this new year, we entrust ourselves to a great God, who created this world and sustains it by his powerful word (Hebrews 1:1-4).
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.
The Lord is all-knowing, all-powerful and ever-present in our world. He is fully in control. He sees, he hears and knows each life – our dreams, our celebrations, our fears and our pain. God’s love and care for us, displayed through the coming of Jesus brings us peace in a troubled world.
Let’s stand together in 2024 and entrust our lives to the one who is truly in control, Jesus.
