John, 161 years ago today, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation which freed over 3.5 million slaves across rebel Confederate states. This was the first act of what would later be the full emancipation of enslaved Black Americans. Today, I'm also reminded of the heroism of my great-great-grandfather, Robert Smalls (pictured), who was born enslaved in the South. After learning the ropes of how to pilot a ship, he steered himself and several other enslaved Black Americans to freedom during the Civil War. His maneuver took grit, determination, and a whole lot of audacity to get in good trouble. He later came back and served as a representative here in South Carolina. I'm running for Congress to follow in his footsteps and exemplify the same commitment to public service.
