In the upcoming year, USA Boxing is set to implement a policy allowing individuals assigned male at birth to affirm their "gender identities" and participate in competitions against women. This decision has sparked considerable criticism, particularly from prominent women's boxing figures.
USA Boxing, the national authority overseeing the sport and its Olympic representation, has introduced a transgender policy into its rulebook permitting biological males to compete in women's categories.
To be eligible, fighters must meet specific criteria. They must formally declare their gender identity as female, be 18 years or older, maintain testosterone levels below a specified threshold, and undergo "gender reassignment surgery."
The definition of "gender reassignment surgery" remains unclear, noting that a significant portion of transgender individuals may not undergo such procedures.
USA Boxing justified the policy in a statement, asserting that its purpose is to ensure fairness and safety for all participants.
The move has triggered substantial opposition from various fighters and boxing commentators. True Geordie, a U.K.-based analyst, expressed concern about the inherent unfairness posed to female fighters. While acknowledging a willingness to use preferred pronouns for transgender individuals, Geordie emphasized the potential safety risks and unfair advantages that could arise, asserting that the issue is not about discrimination but rather fairness.
Ebanie Bridges, a prominent boxing star, also condemned the decision, deeming it "wrong on so many levels." She voiced her disagreement, particularly citing concerns about trans women breaking records in sports like track and field, swimming, and powerlifting. Bridges underscored the distinct challenges in combat sports where the objective is to inflict harm, expressing her opposition to the policy across all sports.
In a social media post, Bridges emphasized her strong stance against the decision, highlighting the potential dangers in combat sports and the broader implications for fairness in all sporting arenas
