John, school vouchers and taxpayer-funded subsidies for private schools are currently being considered by at least half of the U.S. states. This policy harms both students and public schools by taking funds from those schools, reducing state resources for public services, and increasing racial and socioeconomic segregation within our education system.

Free-market mechanisms are unsuitable for education because they undermine education quality and equity. The inefficiencies of the educational system disproportionately affect marginalized and disadvantaged families.
Studies show vouchers rarely benefit low-income families. Geography and the cost of switching schools can be unfeasible, and less public school funding affects those students the most.
