But I can’t help but wonder about where America is headed, and what we can do to ensure we can keep making progress as a free society. When I served in the Navy, the value of freedom and all the things I took for granted before my time in the military weighed heavily on my mind. Americans deserve peace and security, but we shouldn’t lose sight of what is required—of all of us—to resolve our issues peacefully and democratically. History provides lessons, if only we would listen. But it won’t tell us everything. We need to work together, always, and find the path forward no matter how challenging the course. This great country is worth the fight. I decided to run for Congress after long conversations with my wife, my family, and some close friends. At the end of it all, I wanted to be remembered in this moment as someone, like you, John, who took action when the times called for it.
