The past few days and weeks have been a whirlwind of emotion — but last night our movement got to celebrate a big win. Sunrise Movement endorsed Green New Deal candidate Marie Newman (IL-03) won an upset victory against fossil-fuel backed 15-year incumbent Democrat Dan Lipinski. In a moment of so much loss and confusion, this is a much needed victory that shows when we lean in, fight hard, and organize, our movement can really beat the machine. Dan Lipinski has been one of the most conservative Democrats in Congress. This past election cycle alone, he accepted $42,250 in campaign contributions from Big Oil and Gas PACs. Marie took the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge. Lipinski voted to approve the Keystone XL pipeline and has bashed Newman's support for the Green New Deal. Marie wants to build public transit, not pipelines, and was an early signer of our Green New Deal pledge.

Sunrise Chicago went all in on Marie Newman’s campaign and worked with our national team to mobilize the support of Sunrisers from around the country. Sunrise Chicago knocked thousands of doors and our movement as a whole made over 80,000 calls for Marie and other Green New Deal champions in the Midwest. The COVID-19 crisis completely changed the dynamics of the race in the final days, but the team was able to transition swiftly to remote get-out-the-vote efforts to protect the community from the outbreak, focusing on phone calls and social media. With about 3,000 votes separating Newman and Lipinski, it's safe to say that our efforts helped to provide the margin of victory in this down-to-the-wire race.

Marie Newman’s win represents a seismic shift in the U.S. Congress. This is a clear defeat of the oil and gas executives who padded Lipinski’s pocket. They hoped to hold the Democratic party in the past. Instead, Marie Newman will bring it into the future by fighting alongside us for a Green New Deal to deliver good jobs, better infrastructure, and a livable future for her constituents and for all of America.
