Dear friend,
Thanks for being with us in 2023 and fighting for a better world for the disability community! Throughout the year, you saw how much your support means to us and keeps our organization going strong. As we wrap up the year, we've got some big plans for 2024. Check out what we've been up to this month.
Right now, there is lots of information being shared about contagious illnesses, including COVID-19 and Mpox. It can be overwhelming to keep up with new information as it becomes available. That’s why this month we released four new Plain Language and Easy Read resources in English and Spanish. You can also check them out as videos [[link removed]] ! “ What do I need to know about Mpox? [[link removed]] " can help you learn more about Mpox virus, including how you can protect yourself and others. “ What you need to know about COVID-19 vaccines for children [[link removed]] " can help you learn about up-to-date COVID-19 vaccine information for children, like what the guidelines are for immunocompromised children. “ What are global disparities in COVID-19 vaccination and why do they matter? [[link removed]] " talks about what vaccine disparities are and why they exist. “ What you need to know about vaccines [[link removed]] " can help you learn about vaccines, how they work, and who should get them. It also talks about vaccine misinformation. Now more than ever, it’s critical that we take steps to keep each other safe, and accessible resources are an important step!
As we wrap up 2023, we’re incredibly grateful for your support this year. Whether you shared our resources, spread the word about ASAN, or became a member [[link removed]] , your support impacts every area of our work. As we continue to fight for accessible health care, fair pay, and more, we’re glad to be fighting together.
If you haven’t yet, make sure to check out our 2023 Annual Report [[link removed]] and learn where we’ve been and where we’re going in 2024. And help ASAN get ready for the new year by taking our annual survey [[link removed]] ! We’re excited to hear from you about what issues matter to you and what you’d like to see from us.
While we’re getting ready to ring in 2024, there’s still time to support ASAN through your end-of-year giving [[link removed]] . When you pledge your support, you’re empowering disabled people to harness our power and be a part of the ongoing fight for our rights. Thank you for making our work possible!
With warm wishes for the new year,
The Team at ASAN
Our policy team had a busy month to wrap up the year! Here’s an update of what we have going on behind the scenes:
* We joined an amicus brief on abortion care in Texas, including abortion bans, the confusion around medical exceptions, and the effects on people with disabilities.
* ASAN signed onto a public comment in response to the Office of Refugee Resettlement’s (ORR) rule seeking to codify the Flores agreement. The comments focus on strengthening protections against restrictive settings and use of psychotropic medications for disabled youth under ORR.
* Asked Congress to extend authority for Medicare low-income beneficiary outreach and enrollment assistance to sign-ons.
* ASAN joined several comments on the Census Bureau’s proposal to adopt a more restrictive disability measure in the 2025 census
* Urged the Department of Health and Human Services to quickly release the HHS Office for Civil Rights (OCR) final rule implementing Section 1557 (Sec. 1557) of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
* Opposed immigration provisions currently being negotiated between the White House and lawmakers that would further restrict asylum, expand expedited removal, detain families, and revive Title 42.
