2023 has not been easy for women and girls globally.

We began the year continuing our humanitarian response to the war in Ukraine and worsening drought in the Horn of Africa .

In February, devastating earthquakes rocked Syria and Türkiye . 9.1 million people were directly affected by the earthquakes and 3 million had to flee their homes.

Civil strife escalated in Sudan — leaving roughly half its population in need of humanitarian aid and internally displaced.

This fall, earthquakes killed thousands and left many more displaced in Morocco and then in Afghanistan . Flooding washed away entire neighborhoods in Libya in September.

And now, thousands of women and girls have been killed in Gaza as conflict escalates. Tens of thousands more are without access to basic hygiene supplies, food, water, and health care facilities as the humanitarian crisis worsens.
