The Center for Investigative Reporting embodies the concept of journalism as a public service, exposing threats to democracy and critical information about reproductive rights and health care, the criminal justice system, climate and sustainability, and so much more. Because of our reporting in 2023, people were vindicated, legislation was introduced, laws were changed and misinformation was combated. We are grateful for everyone who joined us to make the past year’s investigations, reporting and impact possible.

As you’re most likely aware, 2023 has been a very challenging year for nonprofit journalism. We are not immune to these threats. Newsrooms have been decimated, and paywalls exclude a large portion of the public, while misinformation is plentiful and free. At greatest risk is investigative journalism, which, while resource-intensive, is critical to holding power to account.

We recently announced that we will be merging with Mother Jones. Combining CIR and Mother Jones into a single newsroom addresses these challenges head-on by expanding our capacity for rigorous, compelling reporting and making it accessible to a broad audience on any platform they choose.
