Subject: My reflections on 2023 at Urgent Action Fund

Dear John,

As 2023 comes to an end, I have been thinking a lot about the concept of movement. And I mean movement in its most expansive sense. Movement from one place to another. Movement of people working tirelessly to create change. Movement as progression and regression. Movement of resources, including money. Movement is a big part of our lives. We are always moving away, between, and forward.

Today, I want to reflect on a specific form of movement: migration caused by the ever-growing crises plaguing our world.

Across our grantmaking this year, we saw significant migration and displacement caused by mounting conflict and war, crackdowns on feminist activism, food insecurity, fires, earthquakes, and other events caused by climate change. As these crises and their impacts increased, so did the need for support by feminist movements on the ground.

This is where Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism comes in. For 26 years, we have committed to moving resources quickly and flexibly to enable activists to respond to and navigate urgent threats or opportunities to advance and sustain their activism. And we did just that in 2023.

We provided over 500 grants, our highest number to date. Many of these funds supported activists directly affected by migration in its many manifestations.

In countries such as Turkey, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan, we supported the safe relocation of activists facing threats because of their work. This also included trans activists who have been forced to leave their home due to discrimination and violence.

As the conflict lingers on in Ukraine, we have continued to support essential needs such as food, medical, and legal support, as well as care and wellbeing. Some funds have also been used to relocate activists to other countries for safety and refuge.

Similarly, in Gaza, we supported (and continue to support) local activists who have been displaced within Palestine and to neighboring countries like Lebanon and Syria because of the ongoing war. We have also provided emergency relief for people with disabilities. One group asked for funds to create a helpline that provides specialized services.

In Serbia, funds supported relocation due to water pollution, while in Tajikistan, a group used funds to raise awareness and equip rural women to respond effectively to climate disasters, including in the event of an evacuation.

Our agile and adaptive approach has ensured that we remain responsive to both rapidly shifting contexts and the needs of the movements we support. This model ensures that we support activists who are both responsive and proactive in addressing migration through opportunity and advocacy grants.

Because we understand crises through an intersectional lens, we also apply the same lens in our grantmaking and how we move money.

Recognizing the legacies of colonization and policies rooted in xenophobia, misogyny, and white supremacy, we focus specifically on women, trans, and non-binary activists who are at the forefront of struggles for justice, equality, and liberation but are often under-resourced.

Our grantmaking is not defined by borders. Our reach is transnational—across many countries. The relationships of deep trust we have built over many years enable us, for example, to ensure that activists fleeing one context can find networks and support that allow them to both survive and continue their activism. Together with our sister funds, Urgent Action Fund-Africa, Urgent Action Fund Asia & Pacific, and Urgent Action Fund Latin America and the Caribbean, this reach only multiplies.

Before signing off for the year, I want to thank you for moving with us and helping us move resources to where they are needed the most. Because of your support, feminist activists are moving all of us toward a just, free world we so urgently need.

Warmly,
Kate Kroeger, Executive Director
Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism
