Hey folks, I’ve got some good news. This week officially pushed us over the top for our best fundraising month of the campaign.
That’s critical for a campaign like ours. I first got involved in organizing to get money out of politics, and I’m proud to be running a fully grassroots campaign. We don’t take money from corporate PACs and we don’t have a bunch of super-rich friends bankrolling the way.
This is a community-centered, people-powered campaign through and through, and despite the challenges that brings I wouldn’t have it any other way.
But we still have a long way to go, so I am writing today to ask for your donation to elect the first Green Party member of Congress, and I want to tell you how your contribution can make that possible.
(If you’re already convinced, here’s a link to give: callforcongress.com/EOQ.)
This district is fully winnable for the Greens, and has NO chance of going Republican.
I hear a lot of concerns from people about our campaign being a “spoiler” that will let Republicans take this seat. But there is no way that can happen.
First, this is a solid progressive district, no Republican stands a chance of winning here. Second, Washington’s Top Two primary means people from all party affiliations directly compete for the chance to get on the general election ballot. The two candidates with the most votes will square off in November.
For 22 years Rick Larsen has run against a weak Republican contender that the district fully rejects. I ran against Larsen twice as a Democrat and garnered more votes by far than any progressive primary challenger he’s ever had. Twice we came within a stone’s throw of getting on the general election ballot. This year we’re going to do it.
Simply put, this campaign is THE best opportunity for the Green Party to get our first foot in the door in Congress.
We know how to run a scrappy campaign, which means your contributions go further.
We’re not spending our money on multi-million dollar PR firms and D.C. campaign consultants.
I have a phenomenal team of mostly volunteers and part time staff, and we are each committed to seeing this through. Collectively we have experience across hundreds of campaigns, and we know how to stretch a dollar.
Having said that, as a former union leader and a firm supporter of labor rights and living wages – I want to pay my team. It’s always bothered me when progressive candidates brag about their volunteer-led teams, because I know that means people are working for free.
The only way I can change that is by raising enough money, and it’s easier than you think.
The most common donations we get are $25 and $50. If just HALF of the people reading this email right now gave one of those amounts, honestly? We could fund the entire campaign start to finish.
We could do it TODAY.
It may not sound like $25 can make history, especially with mega rich donors dominating our political process. But there are so many more working class Americans than there are millionaires and billionaires, and when enough of us band together we are THAT much more powerful.
Your donations can help us win this race and make history in the process. So if you haven’t yet made a contribution (or if you have, and you’re able to give again), I would be so grateful for your gift of $25 or $50 today.
In solidarity,
Jason
