Dear John,

I wanted to take a few minutes to check in with you regarding the COVID-19 outbreak and the statewide lockdown. The situation is changing rapidly -- and I understand the anxieties and stress many of us are experiencing now.

The past few weeks, I have been absorbed in conversations with Governor Wolf, local leaders, public health officials, and hospitals in southeast Pennsylvania. On Monday, Gov. Wolf announced a statewide lockdown in efforts to protect our communities and preserve the resources we have on hand.

I will always be honest with you because it’s important for you to hear the truth from me directly: This outbreak will likely get worse before it gets better. Thankfully, there are individual actions we can take to flatten the curve and slow the spread of COVID-19.

We must take necessary precautions such as social distancing, proper hand washing, keeping 6 feet of distance between ourselves and others to reduce the spread of this virus, and staying home as much as possible.

As a community, we must work together to beat this. And we will.

The worry and stress you are feeling now is valid and real. It’s important that during these times we look out for one another. Check in on your friends, family members, neighbors, and elders in your network to make sure they are prepared for the weeks ahead of us.

If we take these precautions now, we can truly save lives, so I hope you will join me in following CDC and official guidelines from our healthcare professionals.

In the House, we are working hard to ensure that every family has the support they need as we confront the coronavirus. We know that our economy has taken a hit. Many have lost their jobs and businesses large and small have closed their doors. But I am working for you.

The Families First Coronavirus Response Act is just one piece of legislation my colleagues and I have been working on. This bipartisan legislation passed the House early Saturday morning and will guarantee:

• FREE COVID-19 testing for all who need it;
• paid sick leave because no one should be forced to choose between their health and a paycheck;
• paid family leave to ensure our loved ones are cared for when needed;
• food stamps, unemployment insurance, and other life-saving safety net programs are well funded.

I will continue to keep you updated as more information becomes available.

We are all in this together.

Stay safe,
Mary Gay
