Team,
Over a decade ago, the Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United decision opened the floodgates for unlimited dark money to infiltrate our electoral politics and warp our democracy. Big corporate interests gained a huge amount of power overnight.
I’ve been leading the fight to limit the power of special interests ever since.
I’ve gone toe to toe with Big Oil as the industry tried to throttle climate change bills – and I’ve secured progress on shifting to renewable energy. I’ve taken on the billionaire benefactors who support the lifestyles of far-right Supreme Court justices – and made strides toward accountability at the Court. I’m the leader in Congress on a major bill to prevent billionaires and corporate interests from being able to anonymously dump money into elections to prop up candidates who will do their bidding – and we’re building momentum all the time.
All of this has caught the attention of some powerful people who have a strong interest in trying to stop me. That’s where you come in.
As I approach my end-of-year deadline, I’m asking you to donate to my campaign, so we can push back against the special interests trying to increase their power over the levers of the federal government. [link removed]
As you know, our fundraising numbers go public after these Federal Election Commission quarterly deadlines. I’m up for re-election in 2024, so people are keeping a close eye on us to see the power of this campaign.
The annual deadline at the end of the year is the most important. I want to send the special interests a message they won’t like: This people-powered movement is not slowing down any time soon.
So I’m asking for your help to do it. If you can, chip in $5 to help us reach our goal for the year so I can continue my work in the Senate to get corrosive dark money out of politics. [link removed]
You deserve a government that is working for you.
Thank you,
Sheldon Whitehouse
