We are seeing first-hand what happens when we gut programs designed to keep us safe, spread misinformation, and fail to lead in times of crisis.

As an officer in the Navy, I've always known that it is our leaders who should take responsibility in times of crisis. Our President's comments are reprehensible and the months he spent blaming "the libs” instead of preparing our country for the worst will ultimately cost lives.

Look, this isn't a partisan issue. Here in Florida our Republican Governor Ron Desantis isn't hiding behind this and is working to help save small businesses, expand access to testing, and being transparent and factual in his statements to the public. It can be done! 

A lot of people, from family and friends to neighbors and colleagues, are either already feeling the effects of this current pandemic or bracing for its impact. Frankly, I'm already struggling to keep my small business afloat and get my teachers enough hours for them to make their bills. But through all of this, our community keeps finding new ways to support those of us who are in need.

But we must continue our fight. This crisis is highlighting more than ever how much we need to build an economy that respects the contributions of our service industry workers, retail clerks, and all those working behind the scenes to stock our supermarkets and fulfill our Amazon orders (not just their CEOs).
